This is Version 0.6.1 of Hotlist2HTML, a bug fix and additional
small change to Version 0.6.

16. 2.94  V. 0.6.1
Corrected a bug which caused the program to produce bad output
if URLs or menu-items longer than 127 character happen to appear
in the Hotlist file.
Creator of the HTML output file changed to ttxt (e.g.Teachtext).

The program Hotlist2HTML converts a MacMosaic Hotlist (resource)
file to a HTML-page, wherein each URL of the Hotlist is
associated with it's corresponding Menu-Item name.
The program should run on any Macintosh were System 7 is
installed.
The Fortran source is included. You need Language Systems
Fortran 3.x and MPW 3.2 (or 3.2.3) to make use of the it.

This Compactor Pro archive contains MacAnim Viewer 1.0 (which displays
GL, FLI/FLC, and DL animations, and GIF and PCX/PIC images, and
automatically unzips .zip archives in search of the same), a THINK C
port of glib (from the xgrasp 1.7 distribution), GL documentation, and
sample images.  MacAnim Viewer was built presupposing a 68020 and
32-bit QuickDraw and works best with an 8-bit color monitor.  Finally,
this distribution completely replaces the GL Viewer 1.1.x
distributions.

Subject: [*] PowerBook 170 screen problem (summary)

Dear net,

on my query about a weird PowerBook 170 problem, where the screen image
would start dancing around every so often and stop when I gave the machine
a good shake, I got two long answers. Since they are instructive on how to
open an PowerBook without "screwing" something to pieces, I am attaching
them as a report. As it turned out, the problem was the display cable
connector in the screen unit having come loose due to vibrations. Opening
up the screen (by taking out the two screws that have rubber pads over
them) and pushing the connector back in remedied the problem. Thanks to
Keith Owens and Steven Taylor for answering!

Version 2.45 fixes a bug on 68LC040 machines that prevented users from

    --Fixed a bug which would, when a newsserver would disconnect,

Shame about the word wrapping in the original! Just wanted to add that I
too have used this method to recover damaged Word files. In general, it
seems that if you can open it, you can recover most of it - with
formatting.

Another tactic is to open the file with a text editor (bye bye formatting),
such as BBEdit, which has the ability to remove "gremlin" characters. You
may still have some characters to remove manually, and you have to
re-format, but I have used this to recover files that crashed Word on
opening.

Need assistance in translating a PageMaker Windows 4.0 file to PM 5.0 for the
Mac.  Saw the recent article in MacWorld (User?) which restated what I though I
knew, i.e., that files for the two platforms are compatible and convertable.
But how?  In despiration, I even read the PM manual, and it is as clear as
mud.
 I have DataViz MacLink/PC, which I use all the time for desktop translations,
but doing a PageMaker document isn't as clear cut as, say, Word Perfect to MS
Word.  Would appreciate a direct response, ASAP.

It depends on what signals the firewall is designed to pass.  I note that
Anarchie 1.1 appears to have a provision to try to go through a firewall

Subject: After Dark 2.0x passwords don't work on my 660av...

Hi all,

    I happily made the upgrade to a Quadra 660av from my venerable 2si by
simply installing the si's hard drive in the empty CDROM bay (after changing
its SCSI address to something appropriate) and copying away.  Unfortunately,
while the 660av is way cool, all is not well.

    After Dark 2.0x keeps forgetting its password every few days, requiring me
to reboot with extensions off and install a fresh copy.  I am now trying it
with the password off, but I really like the protection it gave me from casual
fingers. I only use the "Fade Away" module.

    Does anyone have any specific suggestions (other than spending the rest of
my life farting around with my other inits, cache modes, etc :-) ?

P.S.  I use a lot of different inits and programs, and the only other problem
I've come across on the 660av so far is the occasional crash in WordPerfect 3.0

Works fine on my 660AV with internal CD. Just boot normally, insert
the CD, select it in Startup Disk, reboot, and quickly shove the CD
back in before the hard drive boots. I think there's also something
to avoid mounting the internal hard drive if it's screwed up - a key
combo like cmd-opt-shft-delete

Explaining my "problem" is probably much more difficult than the problem
itself.

Background: I have written several hypercard stacks for the teaching of
foreign languages. I take advantage of the the microphone and recording of
sound, as well as the playback of audio CDs through the CD-ROM drive.

Problem: On the Quadra 650s and 800s that we have, I can play an audio CD
in the internal CD-ROM drive, while at the same time, the microphone is
still connected and functioning. My users can switch back and forth from a
stack in which they record their own voice and play it back, to a stack
which plays segments of the audio CD, _without_ a trip to the Sound control
panel. In fact, an audio CD can be playing at the same time that a user is
recording his or her voice on the microphone (obviously no a great idea,
but it points out the apparent differences between Quadras)

On the Quadra 660AV, the sound from the audio CD will NOT play through the
speaker or the audio out port unless one goes to the Sound control panel,
selects the Audio CD as the input device, as well as clicking
"passthrough". Then, if the user switches back to a stack in which I want
them to record, the microphone is disabled and they have to go back to the
Sound control panel to select the microphone again. Why is this?

Are these two architectures really that different? I've tried reinstalling
the software on the 660AV to no avail. The "getting started" manual for the
660AV seems to reinforce the fact that I cannot get both an active
microphone and audio CD playback at the same time, or at least, not without
a trip to the sound control panel. I consider this a limitation since I
don't have to explain to users about the Sound control panel on any other
machines.

Is there a way to get around this?

A friend of mine recently recieved a new Quadra 650 with the new CD300i
Plus (built in). We installed the cd-rom software that came with it
(version 4.0.2), but it refused to mount any cds. I think it may be
because of the old cd-rom version, which does not recognize the new
model. I read that apple released version 4.0.5 of the cd-rom software,
but I can't seem to find it anywhere, including at ftp.apple.com
(bric-a-brac.apple.com), nor do they have it at the local Apple Center.
If I'm right, how can it be that apple ships hardware with software that
does not support it? Any information would be greatly appreciated,
but if happen to have it at hand, please send me a copy.

First of all, welcome to the happier side of computing!

You can do what you want by using the Apple utility "ResEdit". This is an
utility that allows you to modify the "resource" fork of any files.

What is a "fork" you asked? Well on the Macintosh every file (documents or
applications) have two forks; the Resource fork and the Data fork. Almost
all applications only have information in the Resource fork (ie. the actual
code for the application, dialogs and icons used within the application).
Most documents only have information in the Data fork. The Data fork is
similar to what is stored in a MS DOS/Windows files.

Then each item on your hard drive has a set of "file attributes". These
attributes indicate what type of item it is (the type of document, whether
it is an application, an Extension, Control Panel, Driver, etc.), in the
case of a document it will indicate the creator of the document, the item's
Creation and Modification dates, etc.

Since ResEdit changes the low level attributes (as compare to just the name
or label of the file) you have to be very careful when using it.

You can get this utility from Apple's FTP site (ftp.apple.com), at the path
"/dts/mac/tools/resedit". If you do not have FTP service, let me know and
I'll send it to you. For the manual you can by it at your local Mac book
store, the title is "ResEdit Reference: For ResEdit version 2.1"
distributed by Addison-Wesley, ISBN: 0-201-57767-4 (without disk) and
0-201-57768-2 (with disk).

    When running Norton Utilities on my external Frog 120mb drive, I
get the following message:

       "The extents directory on this disk contains an invalid node - node
       #34.
    It has an incorrect descriptor."

    I get this message either when I run Norton Utilities' Disk Doctor
or when I check the files using Speed Disk. Disk Doctor says it can't fix
the problem. Does this mean:

* I won't be able to retrieve part of one (or more) of the files on my disk?

or:

* What the disk thinks is free space actually isn't (therefore I could damage
    files by copying new stuff on)?

or: something else?

    Basically, I need to have a better idea of what the problem is, and
whether or not I should backup and re-initialise. I'd prefer not to have to
do that, but will do it if that's the only way to fix the problem.

    This may or may not be connected to a problem I was having a few
weeks ago: I was unable to copy certain files onto the disk, due to an
error -36 (I/O error). No, I wasn't copying from a floppy: it was from the
internal HD, and only two files seemed to cause problems. Later on that
night, they suddenly were able to copy, even though I had changed nothing
(I'd added a few files to the external disk, though). At the time, Norton
found nothing wrong with the disk. I also did a verify media test, which
said the disk was fine. Is the I/O error a disguise for the current problem
I have?

Tearing open my new copy of HyperCard 2.2, ready to dig into the new features,
I discovered a small problem.  I daren't say a "bug", but then again...

The HyperCard 2.2 feature of creating a stand-alone application doesn't seem
to work on my SE/30.  I installed the program onto two other machines to see
if it would work (a ci and a cx).  Indeed it did.  I notified apple of course,
but I'd like to know if anyone using HyperCard 2.2 on a Mac SE/30 has seen
this problem.

In Info-Mac Digest V12 #25 Hans Kroeger reported problems in copying from Mac
Draw Pro and pasting into MS Word 5,x

The problem in pasting from MacDraw Pro into MS Word is due to the fact
that MS Word does not handle the PICT2 resource well.

The fix is to go to the MacDraw Pro preferences and turn off Fractional
Widths.  You will notice that the text in MacDraw Pro will 'mess up'
like it does in word.  Fix it in MacDraw Pro before coping to the
clipboard.

AppleScript lets you do cool things that built-in scripting languages can't
do. For example, I wrote a droplet that uses SITcomm to send a tab delimited
file to an application on a Newton.

Well, it depends on what you mean by expensive, and what you want to buy.
Our top-of-the-line package does cost more than $2000 when you include
international shipping costs.  On the other hand, a student version of
CSC ChemDraw costs only $99.  To keep the commercial nature of this post to

I noticed two recent postings discussing the Supra 144LC and its silent answer
feature. I recently purchased this modem, which came with a large sticker on
the
box saying "Includes SILENT ANSWER" - so, I guess its included.

Silent answer is a feature which is supposed to allow shared usage of one phone
line between the faxmodem and a voice phone/answering machine. Basically, when
the phone rings, the modem picks up and "listens in". If it hears specific fax
tones, called CNG tones, it then picks up and receives the fax. If not, it
listens for a while, hoping to hear CNG tones, and then hangs up if it doesn't
hear any.

Subject: There used to be a way for nice bitmap font printing...

I asked this once before and got some incorrect responses pointing me
towards Adobe Type Manager.  ATM doesn't help. That isn't it...

Question is:  What is the secret that is used by LaserPrinters (at least
circa 1988) to print bitmap-only fonts in such a way that significantly
larger point sizes than anything installed in the system still come out
looking nearly as nice as if they were TrueTypes or PostScripts?  Yes,
they did.  I had, back then, a collection of bitmap fonts that would
have gone down to my kneecaps if the bottom of the screen hadn't inter-
fered.  I know that LaserPrinters had a few PS-fonts installed, such as
Palatino, Times, etc...but I doubt if they had Toronto, and with only
Toronto 12 on my disk's system I printed an elegant jaggie-less 48-
point bold-outline-shadow Toronto.  That's a ferinstance.  Had similar
good fortunes with a long list of fonts.

The list of bitmapped fonts for which I have no PS or TT version now
extends to my toenails (or would if...), but on my StyleWriter I they
come out pretty ragged even at their native point size, and horrible
if you shoot for higher sizes.

I'd be somewhat grouchily willing to fetch and shareware or buy the TT
versions of my favorites if that was the only solution, but unfortunately
95 % of them don't seem to exist anywhere even if I could afford them all.
And artistically and in terms of variety, my growing collection of TT's
just doesn't hold a candle.

Is it perhaps the driver-level checkbox for "font smoothing"?  Is it some-
thing I can add or replicate on my StyleWriter?  Is Allan hallucinating
very badly?  Why did my wonderful collection of wonderful fonts which were
so nice in 1988 become virtually useless to me in 1994?

[As I said, it isn't an ATM-able solution.  ATM doesn't do a damn thing
unless you have a PostScript font somewhere for it to draw on.  So now I've
got a copy of ATM, no PostScript fonts, and no improvement in my bitmap
font printing capabilities!]

I am happy to report that the author, Ricardo Ettore, is still supporting it.
When
you pay your shareware fee, you will get the latest version (I have 4.1.2). It
is
still improving and a very nifty way to integrate phrase-shortcuts with any
program.
A brief description: "Typeit4Me" looks at everything you are typing, and when a
sequence matches its directory of shortcuts it replaces the sequence with the
expanded entry. An examply: our secretaries have address lists of all doctors.
The shortcut is the name with the first letter doubled. Thus, it is unlikely
that
the key will crop up in normal writing. They position the cursor in the address
field, type NNAME, and, voila, the full address sits there.

There are various applications, extensions etc. that use the speech
capability of the Mac, but the default is always the same robot voice.

ok,
here is an incredibly obscure problem for you all to solve.
The setup:
centris 610, system 7.1 named exodus
HP laserjet 4M named pYAC, using laserwriter 8.0 driver and appropriate ppd
mac is on campus ethernet, set for ethertalk, in zone Ullmann.
printer is localtalked to mac and used via 'laserbridge' from sonic systems.
laserbridge is set for password protection (this is the host mac so theres no
     bridgepass extension, i'm not sure if thats relevent)
another mac in the zone is running laserbridge, without password
     protection, its printer is 'silentwriter' or something similar.

now the problem. we can't print directly from a Sun machine(leper1) over the
net
because of the password protection on laserbridge. so i got LPdaemon to
for the mac.

but i can't get it to work, either it says its looking for the printer and
then it dies. or it tries to print to the silentwriter (the other printer
using laserbridge). i have no idea where it gets silentwriter from.
the print jobs appear in the lpd spool folder, though.
here are the key parts of the lpd.config file

E.T.O. hasn't provided any news for a loooooooooong time. Except Symantec
stuff. Not very popular among those of us that already had Symantecs
things. Price of E.T.O. went up and 4 CD's per year turned into 3 (that's
another price increase) because of that compiler we already had, knew and
loved :-( We have paid twice for SC++ :-( (And will most likely be asked to
pay again soon when their PPC things comes around)

E.T.O. was once the collection of _all_ Apple dev tools and a good buy. As
it is now you'll have to buy E.T.O., RISC SDK and a _large_ number of
separate dev toolkits to fully support the OS (I can't even keep up with
what is and what isn't the OS any longer). Would be interesting to see a
list of all such toolkits, their prices and a total.

I sure hope Apple will get their act together, and soon. Somehow I doubt it
though:-( I think E.T.O. is dying. Apple has abandoned it and they just

I've just started to use StuffIt Lite v3.0.7 but when I try to encode a file

This happens on a Mac SE and Quadra 610 both running System 7.
